Sometimes, if you stare at a word with your eyes squinted just enough, and spend a long time thinking about it, you can figure out where that word might have come from. Other times there is really no way to tell. The words in this quiz are a combination.
This one is difficult. See how well you do.
8/11. Would have been 9 if I’d gone with a first guess on one of them.

Thanks for sharing, Audrey. Don’t you hate when that happens?

Yes! If only I’d clicked on the first choice! Aargh. Oh well, when you’re guessing wildly, it’s a crap shoot. It’s even worse to be wrong when you were sure you knew the answer.

Most schools don’t have them, I think. Glad you were curious enough to look it up.

I missed one: DEBACLE.
My 1889 Century Dictionary has only one definition for DEADLINE: “A line drawn around the inside or outside of a military prison, which no prisoner can cross without incurring the immediate penalty of being shot down. Used during the American civil war with reference to open-air enclosures or stockades.” I remember learning the word, and that definition, as a child from my grandmother, whose own father had been imprisoned at Andersonville during the Civil War.

Five or six seems to be the average, except for Rolig’s 10 out of 11. Don’t feel bad.

1100. 5/11. A toilet of a score. I will boycott Merriam Webster from now on. And never wear my bikini again.
