The Judas Tree

Judas (or redbud) tree in a Virginia graveyard
Beautiful blossoms drop from the limbs
like the blood of the betrayer
drop by drop
petal by petal
littering the ground
in puddles of pink

Unlike the human limbs
green leaves show
where the petals have been

Did Judas leave behind
a pile of 30 silver coins?

  3. Great poem. If Judas was distraught enough to kill himself, I have no doubt that he’d leave behind a pile of coins. Maybe he thought to give them to the poor first, but I doubt it. (“Blood money.”)
