    1. We belonged to England until 1776. They tried again in 1812, but Napoleon drew most of their attention at that time. Nixon tried to make the U.S. metric (his town of San Clemente even had metric signs along I-5). Nixon resigned before being impeached but more because of Watergate than the metric system.
