New Merriam-Webster Game–Blossom

I just found this new, untimed and comparatively unstressful game on the Merriam-Webster site. It is called Blossom and requires you to create words out of the 7 letters on the petals and center of the blossom. Each word must include the center letter. I played 5 games in one sitting. Some combos are definitely easier than other.

When I had nothing else to do in a library or while waiting, I would take sheet of paper to see how many words I could make out of the word encyclopedias. If you have ever done something like that then this game is for you.

In this particular game, the letter D was the central letter in the yellow center. Having both the E and R made this an easier puzzle.

Please note that this post does not offer technical assistance on how to troubleshoot anything regarding BLOSSOM. If you have trouble using or seeing the game, I can not help you.

    1. There were easier combos. I did better on my 2-5th games because I realized I could use a letter more than once. It took me a few tries to realize that it had to include the central letter in each word too. Not a bad score, Audrey. Thanks for trying the new game.

  1. That’s the Spelling Bee game that runs daily in the New York Times. I’ve played it for ages. The only difference at all is that the NYT plays with a target list of words and you have to find every single one to win. It’s a tough challenge.

  2. Question for you Pat, on the subject of these word quizzes. I’m curious to know if your North American followers generally find the quizzes less easy than us Brits (that’s not to say that I find them easy). There are a huge amounts of words in English/UK usage, and I’m curious to know if all of the more obscure words have travelled across the Atlantic.

  3. Roy, to the best of my knowledge, I don’t have many UK participants. A Canadian writer in British Columbia usually does the best and an American retired college administrator with a good background in Latin and New York Times crossword puzzles. People who are fluent non native speakers of English, also seem to find these more challenging.

  4. Wondering what some top scores are. My wifebegan playing a couple months ago. She found 12 7 letter words twice with a top score of 275

  5. I just found the game this morning. Played 6 times. Got a high of 256 and average of 182, though dragged down by first game before I got the hang of it. Was wondering what “good” scores were. It definitely depends on your letters though!

    1. Nancy, Nice scores. It definitely depends upon the letters. I sometimes like to go back through to see what all the choices might be to see if I could have figured any of them out by myself. Depends upon the letters.

    2. I wonder that too, Nancy. I’ve played for just the last 5 days, with a high score of 334 and an average of 283. No idea what a killer score is though.

  6. It took me several games to realise that one letter each round is outlined, to give extra points if you use it in that round.
Then I realised if you have a word with multiples of the same letter, wait till that letter is outlined, then use it.
Great game. Very addictive. My family whatsapps wordle, quordle, octordle, sedecordle, nerdle and wordiply, but since we discovered blossom the race is really on !!!!!

    1. I think that Genius is the top range, followed by Very Good. I have not played it enough yet to be sure of the ranges and what the top score might be. I have hit the 200s a couple of times.

  7. I just found Blossom, and as someone already posted, it IS, basically, the NYT Spelling Bee. But that’s okay. My problem is, the ENTER key isn’t visible. I can see the shuffle and the delete, but that’s it. Playing on a Samsung Galaxy S9+ in portrait – landscape shows even less! Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

    1. I don’t know and do not have that device. This is not a forum with experienced users available to offer help or even suggestions. If anyone can help with this question, please do so.

  8. Wondering if there is something similar to Wordle bot that would give the average score for the day to get some sense of how well I did.
